A2-D Skyshark

douglas-xa2d-1-skysharklargea2d-pic1

This beautiful aircraft has such a beautiful shape that I used it’s profile as the design basis for most of the Nacelle shapes for the perpetual ships.. one of these babies crashed in a field by my house and I went on an aviation archeological expedition with the X- Hunters ( Two guys from Edwards AFB that have gone out and found most of the X-plane crashes in the Mojave Desert) We found this one and recovered a whole bunch of historical relics from this short lived twin propped airplane.

starship of the day

this is another one from the online game Perpetual was putting together a few years back.. It was a sad day when this game and the company had to fold… what we were seeing  from the team and especially Ryan was beyond brilliant.

vulcan architecture

This was a very fun project. We had the task of creating The Vulcan high Command Bldg. and these sketches show the process of setting a standard for the aesthetics of their artistic culture. The skyscrapers are representative of sword blades fashioned into buildings. Sketch one was approved for the look of the buildings but for an establishing shot the angle ws to high. Sketch two shows a lower version so the planets horizon is a part of the grand view. Once approved the illustration went to color which seen here is a combination of traditional marker and ink and accented with photoshop. A lens flare was added to complete the image. from here the piece went to Foundation to have a CG model made for the episodes FX shots and Doug took the on the task of creating the Translight for the live action and to add a level of detail that to would be copied and modeled over at Foundation.

tholian

35one of the great things about “Enterprise” was that every now and then we would get to work on a vessel that we so loved from the original series… This was a great assignment to retro out the Tholian ship. The drawings went thru fairly easily with only two versions shown here in the sketch. The prominent version in the center was chosen and from here the Foundation boys took over and did their magic!!!

Starfleet vessels

trekkkk1armada-starfleet-vesselA few years back Perpetual Entertainment was putting together an awesome online computer game based on a Star Trek future slightly ahead of “Nemesis” Ryan Dening and Todd Remon were the design leaders on the project and I heard about this project thru the grapevine. I spent a good year bothering them relentlessly to let me come over and have fun with them in the Art Dept. they finally did because someone quit!!!HAAAA! I was in heaven but it was a long drive to work. They were based in San Francisco, I guess it’s just as long of a drive to go to LA!!! This one was one of my favs, and when it came time to interview for the new Trek movie I did a retro version to use as an my application and resume

Race to Witch Mountain

sau1

In Honor of this the first week of the release of Disney’s “Race to Witch Mountain” here are some pictures of the Kids Space craft. I had always wanted to do a flying saucer and this was a fun movie to do so on. This one was a team effort. I worked out the overall look, than CG artist Billy Hunter started to do the set blueprints and detailed modeling, He left early for another gig and Aric Chang came in to finish off all the modeling. These guys are awesome and it was a treat to work with em.

Retro Klingon Bird of Prey Pt. 1

retro-bird-of-prey-reject

This Klingon concept was originally drawn in the DS9 days when an early version of a script asked for a new BOP design, after this drawing was done the new ship was written out so this one got shelved. It surfaced again as an alternate design also for “Unexpected” Well we all know the end results of this topic and it would go to various other meetings as an alternate but never did anything more than go for the ride.
