Project Announcement

I was just asked to design 6 space craft and 6 planets for a William Shatner project. Once the concepts are approved they need to modeled and have a little bit of animation done to them. The group asked if I knew anyone with 3D skills that might want to take on this part of the project. I told them I know where to find the best so Here is where I am posting the announcement. The models will get high visibility and it could be a great door opening project, the only down side is It is a cashless job so it would be a work for fun and exposure project,,, If anyone of you brilliant CG-amandaers are interested drop me a line.

If my modellling skill was up to the task I would jump at this, but alas not.
However I say this would be perfect for deg.
Would make a great place to start to get into the industry. πŸ˜€

I was waiting to hear from you!! I sent them 22 pages of sketches and they are picking 6 right now. I should have the chosen roughs back tomorrow… I love what you did with the saucer so perhaps we should design the details as a team.

Not to hog, but if needed, heck, I’ll crank as many out as needed, eh.

Just a matter of time to do it! I wanna test/form/hone my production speed modelin’ chops anywho. I was JUST talkin’ about this to my Mom in email when I got your email. Oh man, God is good, eh! Always amazed, never surprised, eh!

Let me know more details as you gets ’em John. πŸ˜€

Sounds a good to me, my friend. And thanks glad you likey. That was an ΓΌber-quickie job. Check out my finished Ryan design on my “on the bench…” area. That’s a whole other level of modeling than I did on your saucer design.

With any luck of time, your designs will get the same treatment as that, eh. πŸ™‚

Ah! What an opportunity! I’d love to be considered for this, John. You can see some of my stuff at http://www.neoworxstudio.com. FYI: I’m working on a SOTL piece for next year through Doug. This kind of thing would be awesome to be involved with! Please LMK what you think, and thanks!!!

I’d be VERY interested in making space ships…Theyre pretty much the only things I love working on in 3D πŸ˜€

  10. April 28, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Personally, I loath the act of 3D modeling and avoid it at any cost. However, I do quite like rigging, scenography and animation, so if the “little bit of animation” you mentioned is anything more complex than just a little spin-around to show off the model, I might be able to chip in there.

  11. April 28, 2009 at 2:21 pm

    Hey,

I’m head of the ST: Excalibur project, meaning i have a lot of experience with 3D for space ships, and i also work with 3d visualization every day (mostly architecture though)
If you need to see any High poly CG models, i have a couple renders i can send you for a “personnal portfolio”

There’s also a good deal of then at my CG Society portfolio:

Hmmmmmmm…… 40 bucks? Are you sure that’s not a cracked pirated copy, dude? eBay is infamous as an abode for selling illegal software, cheap, at “unbelievable” prices.

And I personally can’t abide any type of pirating, be it software, or films, or music, as that just steals from other artists, hurts the overall industry, is illegal, and is just wrong, IMO.

If it sounds too good to be true, chanced are very good it is, esp. on eBay.

  18. April 28, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Well, there’s the whole process of license transfer with NewTek that has to be done, eh. That’s a sure sign right there if it’s legal. That, and if it comes in all the official packaging, and the dongle.

Years ago, I bought my copy of LightWave 7.5 and modo 101 off eBay, but I made sure all the legalities were place and in process with NewTek and Luxology, and requested email confirms from the companies themselves, as to the seller’s proposed license transfer.

If he has not spoken of any of this, chances are good he’s trying to run pirated software.

Then again, maybe he just isn’t savvy as to all that needs to be done. But upon opening and installing any major software, it comes with a user agreement that everyone agrees to, just to get going, but never really reads, and that reading is to understand all the things you are agreeing to, and that includes potential transfer legalities and the processes needed thereof, if done.

Maybe you’ll get lucky, and he’s just didn’t read the agreement and thus knows nothing about what needs to be done.

Or, he’s a pirate, and you just bit it. We’ll see. Still, that sounds just like a “quickie” pirate price, too low for most folks to feel they have all that much to lose taking the chance.

Okay, what the heck. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t at least throw my hat in the ring on this one.

John, you can see some of the modeling work I’ve done on the following projects:

    U.S.S. Grandeur – http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/638-uss-grandeur-final-version.html

    Modified TOS Enterprise – http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/37615-conjectural-trek-xi-enterprise.html

I’ve got 3 or 4 others I can reference as well but I don’t want to bog down this post with a bunch of URLs.

Ironically, one of the things I’m best known for is an April Fool’s sketch of a possible design for the new Star Trek movie that appeared on TrekMovie.com year before last. I figure it’s worth mentioning because I deliberately tried to imitate your style when I drew it and had more than one person fooled into thinking it might be your work, which of course was the whole point. πŸ˜‰

It’s about 50/50. On the spacecraft page, the Procyon, tool case and tools are 100% mine, from the design to the modeling texturing and lighting. The Sachoff is part mine, part my coworker’s–I did the basic design and roughed out the mesh, then passed it over to him for final modeling, detailing and texturing. The spaceman is a mixed design, modeled and textured by my partner, and rigged and lit by me.

I also did the planets and renders seen all over the webpage.

I’d have to think about it to recall off the top of my head who did what for RealFlight, but of note, given your love for the plane, I did do the ME 262. πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the compliments, guys. I’m glad you both like our work.

I’ll leave it to the pros and hope we can at least see some of the projects in wip form. Besides, I made a new years resolution to finish what I start before jumping on to something new, wich is already out the door since I just shelved my Z-95 headhunter wip and posted your USS Ramjet wip over at sci-fi meshes. I’d really love if you posted on the process from design to cg.

If you guys are posting messages with multiple links, WordPress may be flagging them for moderation as a spam control issue. Mr. Eaves or someone else with admin/editor privileges then has to approve them before they appear in the comments list. I put two links in mine and it didn’t show up for at least a half hour.

    • 86 Gep Malakai
      April 28, 2009 at 10:43 pm

True. The posts I added earlier all said they were awaiting moderation; those messages went away an hour or so ago.

      • 87 madkoifish
        April 28, 2009 at 11:29 pm

I have had posts give me “awaiting moderation” I know what that looks like. What Evil Genius and I are dealing with is totally different. The odd behavior means those posts will NEVER be seen on the blog, they are blocked or just vanish in the ether.
This happened when I attempted to post WIP updates to the doughnut thread with a list of Imageshack urls, those posts NEVER showed up on the blog and that was weeks ago. To note too every time I get this at wordpress it is when Im in reply mode. Probably some sort of url limit or other odd restriction in some TOS listing somewhere on the WP site.

        April 28, 2009 at 11:34 pm

madkoifish (I’m prefacing this because your post doesn’t seem to have a “Reply” link under it, so I don’t know quite where this post will end up):

That’s really weird. I haven’t ever seen anything like that. When you hit the “Submit” button, what does the screen do?

      • 89 madkoifish
        April 28, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Yeah replay is only one chain deep, hit reply it acts like it normally does just loads the page. Back up or reply again with the same text (I have picked up the habit of copying anything I type) and it’ll give you a “you already said that” If you change your post but leave the urls it’ll just keep going. It could be a bug of some kind I dunno.

Doesn’t really matter atm since both of us found other ways around it. Just frustrating.

Well, late by a few days to this party, but thought I would throw some images in. I don’t think I am anywhere near ready, but “what the heck!”. This first set of images is a current WIP. http://s479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/seattle221/march/advanceproto/ All work has been done in Google Sketchup of all things, LOL. With renders done in Kerkythea. Yea, I know, I must be insane to be using Sketchup, but then again, I have only been doing this about 8 months. Here is the project I cut my teeth on, http://s479.photobucket.com/albums/rr153/seattle221/Seattle%20class/ you can definitly see the learning curve in those images. Any way. hope someone enjoys these, maybe in another 6 months I will be at a stage where I would actually be ready for something like this.

P.S. Vektor’s stuff really is masterful. I take inspiration from everything he does.

    Hi John,

If you still need modelers… I’m be more than willing to help out. I could do Ships or Planets. πŸ™‚
