the A-4 and the jem hedar battle cruiser

It is always fun to dig thru the old aircraft images from Edwards AFB archives. This shot is Navy so it came from somewhere else but there are so man incredible aircraft that have such a strong influence on the look of many of the space craft designed for the various Star trek films and shows. For the Jem Hedar/Dominion battle cruiser, the A-4 played a major role in the overall look of the ship. This was one of the first war ships that I got to work on during the 4 years on at DS9, For DS my primary job was props and work would spill over into some fun vessel projects every once in a while. Here is the 3/4 and found some orthos that I forgot that I had drawn,  HAAA! that old man memory loss is sinking in!!!!

a few big guns from DS9 episode #516 “buisiness as usual”

this was one of those episodes that called for more than a Cardassian Suitcase, or a new dremal regenerator,, this one they needed some big new guns, for If I remeber correctly, a type of simulator firing range… What was needed for this one was a variety of major blaster designs, and a battle robot for target practice!!!!

OK then, so enjoy these pictures and everyone have great and blessed Memorial day!!!

the 30th anniversary of ALIEN

This Memorial Day will mark the 30th Anniversary of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece: “ALIEN”

Wow that seems so long time ago!!! I saw it opening day with my Dad. It was one of my first “R” rated movies and boy-oh-boy my little mind was not quite ready for what I was about to see!!!  We went to the big Cine Capri theater in Phoenix, Arizona to a majorly sold out crowd. My pop was a Highway Patrol man back in the day and while waiting in the lobby he saw a fellow officer who was also anxious to see the movie. Always on the job, my dad noticed a little guy over in the corner with something shoved in the back of his pants/under his shirt. He was sweaty and looked a little out of place. In less than a heartbeat my dad and his buddy had this guy shoved in a corner, thrown to the floor and pulled out a big 357 Magnum from his trousers. The two patrol men questioned the little guy for a moment and determined he was OK, he was sweaty because it was 110 degrees outside and looked out of place because he was waiting for his girl to arrive — first date jitters!!! In PHX AZ it is OK to pack your firearm as long as it is not hidden. Back then AZ was still a cowboy/old west kind of state. The little guy said he got picked on a lot and his “heat” usually detours him from getting roughed up, he checked his gun in at the snack bar and went in to the show. Well this was already getting to be a pretty exciting evening. So anyway the movie started, I was scared out of my wits and loved every minute of it… after the show we went to the record store and Pop got me the soundtrack on LP… Wooo wee it was a Jerry Goldsmith score… I had only been collecting soundtracks for a year or so and was very excited to add this one to the other three Goldsmiths I had at home; those being  “Capricorn One”, “The Boys from Brazil”, and “The Omen”. Looking back today this is still one of my top favs for so many reasons: The score being #1, Ron Cobb being #2, Veronica Cartwright #3, Ridly Scott#4, and on and on… Last week at Wonderfest they showed the Directors Cut which I had not seen before and was thrilled at all the new stuff added… Veronica C. was there signing autographs and chatting with the fans, she even introduced the film with some fun little facts before the show started.  It was a great time and if you haven’t seen this new version it is a must to go and check out.  In regard to Jerry Goldsmiths score, there are many complete soundtracks floating around and this is definitely something you will want to add to your Goldsmith collection!!! Most of the cues on the extended discs are new from the standard release and are amongst the best of the entire soundtrack.

Thanks for that great day at the movies POP!!! always think about those fun times we had!! Anyway here are some images from Alien to get the old adrenaline pumping!!!  Happy 30th!!!

Almost forgot to mention this!!!!! In 1974/75 John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon were making their student film Dark Star and adding in footage so as to be able to release it in theaters. Dan co-wrote the film with John. In the middle of the film is a scene where Dan’s character, named “Pin Back,” has to go and feed the Alien. For the next 20 minutes Pinback has to deal with this naughty little fella who hides in shafts and attacks from behind… HMMMM… seems like a great idea for a bigger and scarier movie doesn’t it? Well with that, Dan went on to write Alien for Fox… and the rest is motion picture history!!!

Penumbra #567 DS9,

AHHHHH these were the bright days of working on ST DS9. 1990 to 1997 were the dark years for me,,, To sum it up quickly,,,a bad marriage,,, as is for all of us geeks, and fan boy/girls, we uber-geek out to much and don’t date enough. Naivety  was the case here, and it made for a long, blurry, dark 7 years,,, OK now that the table is set we get to DS9 and the episode called Penumbra, well lets go back a few more months to “ST Insurrection” During the end of this one I took my daughters to Sunday school at our little local leona Valley Church, and I fell madly for their Sunday School teacher,,, It took a long time to get her to go out with me but she finally said yes and we went to the screening of Insurrection for our first date. Time flew by and I learned to smile again and we were engaged shortly after. DS9 was coming to the end of it’s 7th season and the assignment came to my desk to draw a new ship for an alien race called the Breen. I started to throw some sketches together  and quickly came up with the idea that I would base this ships architecture around the letter “T”,,, “T” as  in Tara,,, HAAAA!!!!!! So the designs started coming out in various stylized fashions, first in a symmetrical layout and then into an asymmetrical style that really thru the whole more into an Alien feel. The fighter version embarked on a “Y” style design and in the drawings you’ll see that it flies in two directions,,,, Yes it was another maddening scenario with that one supervisor that always tried to make things fly the opposite direction!!! UHG!!! I was burning out with these constant directional discussions. HAAAAAA!!! Anyways the ship went thru a considerable amount of changes until it hit the final multilayered aysemetrical design that was my fav of the whole bunch,,, Usually the one chosen is the drawing you like the least but this time it was the opposite. from there the Mighty Drex took over and started to model the ship,, This was the first venture on the show that we got to work on as a team,,, It was exciting!!! Doug really made a gnarly model and loved the color he chose to put it into!!! Oh those were some awesome times. In final the ship from it’s top view is of a very stylized “T” and it was a great time to make that one for my young bride to be!!! So with that there is a lot to see so enjoy and I have to get to work!!!

Twilight Zone: The Movie – The Complete Score

tz 1

YAAAAH-HOOOOO,,,,, IT"S FINALLY HERE!!!!

YAAAAH-HOOOOO,,,,, IT"S FINALLY HERE!!!! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm?cdID=422

It has been about 26 years now that I have been longing for this complete score as I am sure many of you have been also. Lukas Kendall and Mike Matessino, are the hero’s that accomplished this much awaited musical project,,, They have so passionately compiled all the music composed by the Great Jerry Goldsmith for this film and have put it all on one complete disc. Jerry created some incredible themes and scores for the TZ movie and I have not stopped playing this one since I got it yesterday!!! Enchanting, brilliant, Moving and Hauntingly Beautiful, this one is a masterpiece and a must have,,, Only 3000 CD’s cut for this release so don’t wait to long to snag this one. For a quick sample of the music there is a cue or two on the website and plenty more on You tube under Twilight Zone the movie soundtrack!!! OK fellow Goldsmith collectors be sure to give me ago when you get this one and we’ll have a musical review day!!! Happy collecting.
