Today is an outstanding day, 55 years ago Warner Brothers released the first of the Giant Bug movies. Entitled “THEM”, This movie was born from the atomic age where the question, if a little bug was exposed to radiation, what would happen???? Well, the folks at Warner Brothers said, BIG ANTS. Released in 1954, it was a huge hit and sparked a series of giant bug movies to follow. In July of this same year there was the Giant Gila Monster followed by 1955’s Tarantula, 1957’s The Deadly Mantis, and the Black Scorpion. Low budget films came as well, such as the Giant Leaches and Night of the Lepus. “Them” had it all, an awesome cast with James Whitmore, the lovely Joan Weldon, Edmund Gwenn, and the towering James Arness (of Gunsmoke fame), followed by spectacular giant animatronic ants, great locations and some spooky music. Here are some images from the masterpiece of what would be termed a B movie and a couple of links to supplement the film. By far the best link is to Joe Dante’s Trailers from Hell site, which, once you’re there, you’ll spend the rest of the night watching all the cool trailers and the huge amount of gurus that take you through the trailers. So with that, Happy Anniversary and have a good time with THEM!!!
