Hand mixers and the space craft from “Enterprise” episode #22

Episode #22 “Needs of the One” [later renamed “Vox Sola”] was a story in which the Enterprise gets infected by a life-form that sorta cocoons whoever crosses it’s path.  The life form is transplanted by another ship that is docked with the NX-01 and hides in one of the cargo holds. It’s not such a bad alien once you get to know it, and the crew winds up returning it to it’s home planet by the episode’s end!  Three versions of the alien ship were drawn for the new race, and a hand mixer was used for the inspiration for the approved concept #3.  #1 was my fav and I forgot about it after the episode was done or I would have tried to pitch that one in a later episode.  HAAA!!!  Also are the sketches for how the creature would look, the web it would weave and two versions of it’s home world.  Lots of fun from the first season!

Good morning John, happy Monday. All three of those ships designs are great – I’m with you though, the first one is my favorite as well. It’s neat to see how you can take just about any inspiration piece [fish, mixer, etc.] and turn it in to a starship. That is quite a talent you have!

That alien is definitely something you wouldn’t want to run it to in a dark room. Thanks

I saw this ep only a few weeks ago. Not a bad episdoe.
I am with you on that first desgin. but I do like the one they went with.

What is the oddest thing that you have used for insperation for a star ship?

I can see the handmixer resemblance easiest on #3, but not so much on #1! Your artistic eye sees everyday things in amazing ways!! I think any one of these would have made a great alien ship.

Both detailed drawings of the planet surface are good, too. It’s been too long since I’ve seen this one! We got the chance to see the episode with the Borg on Saturday, which I missed the first time around. Hopefully this one will come up soon!

Just sent you two screenshots of the Kreetassan ship for inclusion, if wanted, John.

The episode’s title was changed to “Vox Solis” and then again to “Vox Sola”

All three ship designs were good

^ That explains it… I thought it was odd that “The Needs of the One” was used as an episode title and I didn’t remember.

I like the ship we got, it’s still an unusual design, but yeah, #1 does look cooler.

That reminds of of an excericise we did at art school, you probably did it too. The idea was to take the most boring every day common object, and re-design it into something dynamic and exciting.

I like sketch #1 the best. That elevated head is really stands out.

Question, John. After working with the same producers for several years, are you able to predict which designs they will like better? What can you do if their choices are not the designs that you like best?

I liked this episode a lot. It had such a great tone to it, down to the music, which was different than the average episode.

I love the first ship design, it reminds me of a rabbit’s skull, though I imagine I might be the only one…
And I love the first sketch of the alien too. In my personal vision of the episode, as of today there is actualy a “core body” like that hiding in some unfilmed corner.
