mish mash sunday/monday

WOW, busier now than I was when I was on the Green Hornet!!  So to keep the blog alive, here is another mish mash day!!!  What you get today is two tropical locations, The first is Risa from DS9 and the second is the first pass for the Baku village from ST Insurrection.  In the script, the village was a grand set of ruins set in the side of a mountain high above a rain forest.  This was a fun drawing, and the set scaled down considerably by the time the construction department started up.  Next, direct from the Perpetual files comes a little starship called the USS Nelson.  This was one of the last ships I did for the Star Trek On-Line game when Perpetual was heading the gaming division.  I named this little craft after my friend, Doug Nelson, who was retiring from his post as the Museum Curator out at Edwards Air Force Base.  Mr. Nelson put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into creating one incredible milestone of a museum for the base.  And finally, here is the Xindi cargo ship from Enterprise episode #59, which later would be designated as Degra’s ship in later episodes.  OK friends, enjoy the Trek mash for today and hope to get back on track in a day or so!

I really like that concept for the Baku village. Was it too expensive for the production crew to construct something that elaborate (only reason I can think of why it was dropped.)

I also like that little ST-O ship and Degra’s ship is always cool. 🙂

That Xindi Cargo drawing has a sort of creepy air about it. Not sure what it is about it, but it is foreboding! I think it might be the light coming out of the bottom of the ship where the Xindi are standing. Kind of like the scene where Hooper goes down to check out that wreck at night and turns on those underwater floods in Jaws. :: shudders ::

Love the small ship design and the detail on the Risa piece is amazing!

Hey Matt good to hear from you and thanks, Funny you brought that up because the under lighting was a direct pull from Hoopers boat!! I so love that scene!

The USS Nelson is a very cool concept! Looks like a flying tank. I guess it should have been a sucessor of the USS Defiant. Beside that, I like the name too. Even if you named it after your buddie, Nelson was also the great british Admiral from Trafalgar. A good name for such a ship.

The Baku village should have been a village between ancient ruins near a jungle? Man, I can’t understand the decission why Mr. Berman or his bosses changed that. I guess the order “keep it cheap” was given 😦
IMO Insurrection would have been far more interesting for the audience if they kept the jungle-ruins-setting.

    John

I like the mish-mash days. The side profile of teh Nelson kind reminds me of teh dark star.

Nice stuff, dude. I just watched Insurrection last night, and I must sat, it’s quite amazing just how bad the VFX are. Blue Sky|VIFX has done some awesome work in the 3D cartoon arena, but man, they were out of sorts with spaces-craft/space VFX. Still, not all bad.

The Nelson is a cool little ship!

    I’ve been trying to ask you but my comments always got lost in the flood;

Have you got any material back from the time you worked on Spaceballs?

Man, another cool design for STO that Cryptic should’ve used. Much better than their lazyily designed Viligent-class.

    Very nice mish mash this.

I love the Baku village concept, although I’m qite fond of what we saw on screen. I definatly think it could of been cool to use in enterprise, maybe as some type of Vulcan ruins or something.

The Nelson class looks great, a nice compact vessel, I could see a design like that been a staple work horse within the fleet for inter planetary misions and the like, a bit like a larger runabout for starbases or something.

Always been a fan of Degra’s ship, although its design always confused me somewhat as it had such a striking resembelance to the Insectoid ships, although the ship is obviously Xindi so its not that much of a concern. It’s definatly one of those hero ships you could immediatly identify as been ‘Degra’s ship’. I know alot of people disliked Enterpise, but I’ll admit I’m quite happy it brought the Xindi into Trek Lore, they are a pretty interesting race (or 5 races should I say!).

I just saw the ENT Ep “Two Days and Two Nights” (just aired on Syfy Friday) and thought how great Risa looked on that. It seems very similar to the drawing for DS9 here. Was it a carryover, or did someone do it new for ENT?

    Nice helping of mash, yum!!

I absolutely love the U.S.S. Nelson. Scaled differently (perhaps inspired by the sizing of the warp winglets) I could see this as a big sister to the Defiant.

    😀

Love the Baku village, would have been sweet to see it like this.
You said did a more elaberite on after this. any chance of seeing that.

I love the Nelson, when I first saw the name before reading the text, I thought it was named after the British Admiral. But it still cool to name it after a firend.

I always like Degra ship, such a cool looking ship.

The Nelson is a very nice ship. I have a question though about the NCC registry number. Mike Okuda has said that the NCC numbers were assigned chronologically. Granted, due to communication errors this convention was not always followed on screen. NCC-62438 would place this class between “Nebula” and “Galaxy”, but the design makes it seem more of a contemporary of the “Sovereign” class.

The Ba’ku concept is waaaay more exciting than what ended up on screen. It reminds me a bit of the Eloi village in the Time Machine remake. Not in it’s actual design, but just the general feeling. It looks like an exotic paradise with an ancient history. The version in the movie was still good and it was impressive how much they built, but it seems kind of bland compared to the design above.
