Jonny Quest turns 45

Happy 45th Anniversary to my all time favorite cartoon as a kid!!!! This one had it all, Scientists, evil villains of all kinds, awesome sci-fi gadgets and aircraft, Monsters, Dragons, Dinosaurs, and Mummy’s, OH MY!!! And a couple of kids with nothing better to do than go on a world wide adventure with their dad and a cool James Bond type body guard nammed Race Bannon!! What was rare for a main stream cartoon at the time was that the bad guys often got shot and killed or crushed by flying boats or massive boulders!!! I remember one episode where Jonny’s dad hollers; Jonny…Hadji, grab some guns and shoot anything that moves!!!  Hanna Barbera put this classic out on September 18th 1964 and the show aired on ABC and only lasted one season!!!  Truly a masterpiece and has place in history as one of the many classics created in the 1960’s!!

starship mish mash from the series, Enterprise!!!

It’s been a while since I have gotten anything Star Trek up, so here is a high res of the Xindi cargo ship that later turns into Degra’s ship.  A low res was posted a while back, and with this one you get a better view of all the little details.  Next are a variety of Xindi probes, and just like grade school, the chosen version would get a star and happy face drawn next to it, HAAAA!  It’s followed by a little ship from episode #37 “Precious Cargo”; I loved when we would get the opportunity to come up with ships out of the ordinary, and this one was a fav to work on!!!  A real frumpy ship with a real gritty slice of external piping and details.  Finally comes the variations of what would be the new Andorian battle ship.  The 4 versions covered a broad gammut of styles, and in the end the upper left idea was chosen and nicknamed the Andorlactica because of it’s Battlestar Galactica (1970’s) front end resemblance!!!  So with that, thanks for the fun week and all the fine comments about all the fun pin up stuff!!!  Have a great Weekend and catch up with things promised to post on Monday!

Just jen and her amazing talent at pin-up modeling!

It has been a long time since I have had 5 minutes to post an entry, and today I only have 5 mins to do so!!  I was in Arizona all of last week and shot some awesome vintage style shoots across the state with some wonderful pin up models!!!  I had been a big fan of “Just Jen” for quite some time, and was so happy to have gotten the opportunity to work with her in Tucson last Tuesday!!  Here is a teaser shot of Jen by the B-47 and we had a great time creating some really awesome images!!!  Jen is an outstanding lady on all fronts and I so look forward to sharing more from the two shoots we did.  OK, on the run!!  Just started working on “Bones” today, and it’s a busy day to say the least!!!  Have a great week and hope to get back on track here as soon as possible!

art of John Carpenter’s “Ghosts of Mars” day one

Well, here is a mish mash favorite, I didn’t think I had all this on the computer but found it in a frantic “what to post” search…the images are soft and the exposures aren’t sharp, but this was done in the days when I didn’t have a scanner so I had to take pictures of the original art taped to the wall!!!!  HAAA, the old days of my computer illiteracy…not much more advanced now either!!!  HAAA!  Anyway, after DS9 and Geppetto there was a long dry spell in movie production, and I discovered a website called Production Weekly.  It’s a site that lists all productions that are getting ready to start.  Some never do and others just take longer to get going, but at least you know what’s out there.

It was early 2000 and I came across the listing for a new John Carpenter Sci Fi/Horror movie called “Ghosts of Mars”.  JOHN CARPENTER!!!  Holy Cow!!  I called and broke every rule to get through to the Production Designer on this one, and I was so glad that they brought me on!!!  Bill Elliot was my boss, and we worked out of the Culver Studios in Culver City.  The crux of the job was architecture and a whole load of props.  What you see here on day one is the establishing look of a Martian mining community.  The buildings were to have the look that they were dropped from a mold and have a gritty adobe type finish.  John’s point on the designs of things was distinguishing different places by the shadows they cast.  After showing him many renderings of various buildings, this was kind of the conclusion I came up with in how I would draw each structure.  Lot’s of fun drawings for today, and it was a blast to work with one of my all time favorite directors.  So with that, enjoy day one!
