here is a scale chart I came across over the weekend which shows the scales of three of the federation vessels attached to the Enterprise-E. First is the Captains Yacht, then the shuttlecraft, followed by the scoutship. all ships are in scale to each other and were all a part of a series of drawings from insurrection to putt final figures on all the vessels from the smallest to the largest, for those that saw or remember this one you’ll see immediately that these charts had no reverence to what was seen in the final film, HAAAAA!, fun to draw thought. So enjoy and for those coming to Wonderfest this coming weekend I’ll have lots of blue prints and charts from these and many others and the presentation will be on Ironman II and the restoration of the Nostromo.

I’m trying to get back into building 3D interiors for fan projects and that’s one of the designs I always hoped to tackle but never managed to find a large enough picture of.

Nothing that I would be so presumptuous as to ask for, sir, but thanks for asking! I’m obviously more of the Trek nerd, but a couple of my friends are huge Alien and Predator fans (so much so that one of them actually has a man-sized Predator he sculpted himself standing in his movie room), so I know they are going to be super-psyched over anything Nostromo-related.

I always loved the scoutship deaign; I actually used it as a base to design a ship of my own awhile ago before I found this site ^^;

it was a funny ownership issue to mix movie items with TV items but from TV to the big screen was allowed, the reverse was rarely to never permitted
I love seeing scale drawings! They show you how things fit together and make the world you see on the movie screen so much more realistic. So why is it that the scales of the ships are so often discarded? I can never understand why they’re carelessly set aside the way they are. Can anyone give me a good reason for this?
On another (very sad) note…I just learned that the greatest fantasy genre artist of our time, Frank Frazetta, has passed away. Even if you’re not a fan of “sword and sorcery” art, if you have any real love for fantasy and sci-fi then I’m sure you know his work. He epitomized the images of warriors like Conan the Barbarian and John Carter of Mars. With his passing, an age has ended.
On Star Trek anyways the size changed to fit the drama of the scene,, the collector ship from Insurrection is a good example of this,, one of the establishing shots of all the Sona ships and the Enterprise-E doing a fly by shows everything at once and in there appropriate scales,, later in the film the collector ship grows from about 3000 feet to well over a mile in length just to accommodate a cheesy VFX fly over strafing scene,,,, we all cringe in the art department when these things happen!!!! ARGH!!!!!!
It’s really too bad when things like that happen. For me, it makes it seem like the filmmakers don’t care about how important it is that things fit together the way they’re supposed to. They think the audience doesn’t notice, but we do. I remember seeing “Insurrection” in the theater. During that strafing run you mentioned, my wife (who isn’t nearly as big a Trek fan as I am) leaned over to me and whispered, “that thing (meaning the collector) didn’t look that big before, did it?” I just shook my head, knowing full well what had happened. When even a casual viewer can spot such obvious and deliberate gaffes, it doesn’t enhance the drama; it reduces it because it disturbs the viewer’s suspension of disbelief.
Real drama goes on everyday and our lives are always in scale with our surroundings. Filmmakers should take that into consideration before they make such decisions.
I think these scales were pretty well represented in the movie.
The mission scoutship is overall a similar size to a runabout, but is not modular, and appears to have a rather cramped cockpit based on what was seen onscreen. I imagine these are power-packed ships, probably a warp factor or so faster than a runabout, but not nearly as comfortable or versatile. There is probably a small aft area with spartan accommodations for one, or perhaps two. The design seems influenced by the Defiant.
yes the defiant was the lineage for the architecture!!! the smaller cockpit area was script driven although it is kinda nice to have a smaller piloting area unlike so many of the other ships that have huge amounts of room with very little glass to see outside!

Did you draw scale charts for any of your DS9 ships (Dominion battlecruiser, battleship, Cardassian freighter, Breen ship, etc.)?
I had trouble loading the pages, but once I got the large size no problem.
But what I want to know is just how fast did you John Eaves want thiese ship ships to go?
Ever since I saw Insurrection, I fell in love with the Venture’s design. Its like a Runabout mated to the Defiant-class. 😀

I don’t think I’ve ever read who came up with the name “Sovereign-class”. John, do you know? Probably it had to be approved by Rick Berman, but I wonder who originated the name.
Of course this would be an Eaves design! Loved the scout ship! One of those that I wish we had gotten to see more of.
