I was just thinking about this the other day. I can clearly recall when networks would logoff for the night. Normally the station in my town would play a video of “High Flight” and then the National Anthem then………………..snow until 6:00 AM. You don’t see that anymore. Thanks for the memories!

Ha Ha nice, I love it, it reminded me of the TV channels in Gibralter back in the 80’s, they did not start to boradcast unitll 18:00 and then go off air again at midnight.
Us Forces brat’s where greatful when BskyB fianlly came as we could watch British TV shows. It also where I got my first introduction to Trek. I had seen the movies at that point but none of the TV shows. Back in those days TNG had not yet come to the UK so sky would show TOS starting of with the Cage.

Nice. I forgot about those old TV signoffs. I remember the F-16 one from when I was a kid. Nowadays that has been replaced by “The following is a paid commercial…” 😉
Thanks for posting these, I like the progression from oldest tech (the F-104, which I love) to the 2nd plane (I don’t know what it is) to the F-16.

Last year or so ago, at the Oceana Naval Air Show (which is taking place this weekend by the way…if you find yourself in the Virginia Beach, Virginia area, please stop on by!) they had the last three flying F-104s on display and they did a one-after-the-other take off. Spectacular!
Heck yeah, baby! F-frakin’-104 flyin’ high!!!
I never saw any of these ever, that I recall anywho, and I KNOW I would have remembered that 104! Chicago just played the National Anthem with a sign-off card, and maybe had some montage footage at some point, but I don’t recall any cool aircraft footage, and I’ve been an aviation nut my whole life. Or maybe I was just too much of a sleepy-head and never made it stayin’ up to catch ’em.

Haha! I love it! I never got to stay up late enough to see them but I sure was up early enough in the morning to see the station start ups! I remember many a Saturday morning sitting infront of the TV waiting for that snow to disappear and for the show to begin, all the while my parents snoozed away upstairs!
Ah, the Saturday Morning kid-ritual! Those days are long gone, eh. God, I used to love those mornings with my bro. 🙂

For sure! Sadly, Saturday morning cartoons just aren’t what they used to be. There’s less than a handful of stations that have them now and what it out there is definitely not the calibur of what we grew up with. Thank goodness for TV shows on DVD so I can make sure my son gets an appropriate cartoon “education”! ;D

I always wanted to have complete control of those sign off programs in my youth. It was, to me, the most powerful program on television. Every insomniac, drunk, stoner, pensioner and everyone in between would be watching out of boredom.
Imagine the possibilities.
Its too bad thse sign offs are seen at the wee hours of the morning. I think they’d be a great way tostart your day.

I wonder how many stations played “High Flight”…We used to get that sign off from WFLA-TV out of Pensacola, Florida and I always figured that was because that’s where the Navy pilot’s school was and where the Blue Angels are based out of. It never occurred to me that it might be used as a TV sign-off elsewhere.
On Saturday mornings, I would get up before the sun, because it was the most magical day of the week! Not only was there no school, but it was CARTOON DAY! I’d get my bowl of ready-sweetened cereal (usually, Cap’n Crunch) and sit down in front of the TV and watch the static…later would come the station card, followed by the Farm Report (Pigs are up! Cows are down…)and later, Davy and Goliath and then cartoons until noon! It’s a shame that you can watch cartoons 24/7 now…and nobody seems to play any classic Warner Bros. cartoons anymore…well, since I’ve mostly stopped watching TV.
Oh! I had an opportunity to buy and actual TV “Indian Head” test card at a local surplus store…but they wanted $75 for it and I think I needed that money to eat or something. Anyway, I regret not getting it now.
I was curious about something. I was looking at the FC sketchbook you did and noticed some of the concepts you did such as the Endeavour, that were unfinished for some reason or another.
Have you ever gone back in your free time and fleshed some of them out?
