Miss Katy Awful, a red dress story

katy 1

Two weeks ago I made my annual Tucson Arizona trip and met with some old friends and some new ones for some awesome pin up style photoshoots. I had met Katy via her Model Mayhem page and we got together at the Pima Air and space Museum for a vintage style aviation themed pin up. Katy’s sleek style and elegant way of posing for the camera made for some very beautiful pictures. She has a very inventive imagination when it comes to outfit choices and in the first set of shots at the museum she wore a lovely formal gown that really put a gorgeous twist to the look that we are all so familiar with. We shot two wardrobe sessions at the park the pictures she took there are breathtaking!!! We talked about shooting a red dress theme before I had to go and Katy was pretty excited about it.. She found the location in the mountains above old Tucson and did quite a bit of research on the old 60’s characters. we meet again two days later at this awesome rocky location and she hops out of the car with the coolest Trek style Hair doo, (which she did herself) and some classic fishnet style stockings. Katy has a magical presence about her not to mention she has a towering figure coming in at 6 foot 2, She is a very unique and gifted young lady and she has the world before her to do what ever she wants. Modeling is her artistic outlet and she shines ever so brightly using herself as the medium  in which she creates her art!!! Thanks Katy and for all you pin up fans your in for a great treat. enjoy and as always there will be more to come. Also be sure to check out the next spot I’m working on for StarTrek.com, Katy will be the special red dress guest for the next article.

    Hi John:
More beautiful pinup pics – Katy, and your camera, really capture that original series look. Thanks for taking the time out from you obviously busy schedule to post these for us.

On your creative side, what do you enjoy most – the concept art, model building, or photography?

    Thanks again and take care,

I like them all but model maker is a mood thing,, I have to really be in the mood to want to expose myself to the toxins before I’ll make a model, HAAA!

    But she’s not awful. 😉

That’s some great stuff. Though, I do have to point out that the nose ring kind of takes away from the authentic ’60s look. (I’m not complaining, I’m just saying. ;))

In todays modeling world a great deal of models carry something outwardly that expresses themselves inwardly. piercings and tattoos usually give a glimpse of what is important and makes up their own identify. To capture a very authentic style is more in the way you set up the shot and what location and accessories you use.A lot of the models I work with defiantly have a lot to say about themselves thru jewelry and body art and I find it quite fun to mix the eras by letting the model shine with who they are mixed with their own take on a vintage them or style gone by. Thanks for the note and always love your feedback Evil_G

I was just yankin’ your chain about the nose ring. 😉 Of course it’s important for the models to bring their own style, otherwise what’s the point in having different models?

It’s great that you have time to post again. I can’t speak for everybody but I know I’ve missed your great pin-ups and other artwork, interesting stories and great responses. 😀

Oh, stop. I’m not that awesome. Just a little bit. I remember how high the nose of the Dc-3 is, and when you’re a little kid, it looks alot higher.

The B&W shot reminds me of a 1940’s Hollywood dame, possibly due to how well the shot is lit. If you did it in the dark Katy would probably come across as a 1930’s Chicago gangster’s moll.

Fantastic work as always, John and please shoot whoever came up with “Katy Awful”.

    She’s anything but…

thanks Barrie, and I asked her about the name today and she said that it was a tough contrast instead of the obvious sweet n pretty names she could have chosen!

    Two things…

First: Wow! Ms. Katy is a sight to see. My favorite shots are the B&W photo and the shot of her in profile which opens this post.

Second: I think I saw her tonight on an episode of “Cash Cab.” Ben Bailey picked up four young ladies, one of them a platinum blonde with pink streaks in her hair. I thought, “That girl looks a lot like Katy Awful, the model in John’s latest pin-up shoot.” Then, when he asked them for their names, the blonde said hers was Katy. “Interesting,” I thought, “but it could still be just a weird coincidence.” Later, she used a mobile shout-out to help with a question, and the graphic that came up showed that she spelled her name the same way. By that time I was convinced it was, in fact, Ms. Katy Awful. If you speak to her, ask if that was her on “Cash Cab.” I’d love to find out if I’m right about this.

It may not be the most flattering thing to say, but when I first saw Katy with the uniform and blonde hair with a pink streak, I immediately thought of Ensign Sue of Ensign Sue Must Die fame. Fortunamente, I cannot at all believe that Katy is as obnoxious as THAT particular character, especially after seeing that beautiful B&W beneath that airplane. That picture is fantastic.

Simply beautiful and very easy on the eyes! She wears that dress well! Great pictures John!! The black & white photo? Priceless. There a beautiful, soft elegance about that shot that just grabs your eye and draws you in.
