June 25th 1964, first flight of the X-15A-2

June 25, 1964 = North American X-15A-2 (p: Maj Robert Rushworth).

X-15A-2 56-6671 First Flight 2-32-55 June 25, 1964 Rushworth

Today marks the 45th Anniversary of the flight of the X-15A-2 flown by Robert Rushworth.  The X-15 is a wickedly beautiful, ultra fast piece of aircraft developed by the North American Aviation.  Categorized as one of the Blackbirds (Sr-71, U-2), it was the fastest of all the manned experimental  aircraft.  Pretty much, it was a seat strapped to a giant rocket engine, and it made it to the incredible speed of 4,534 MPH and reached an altitude of 354,200 feet.  One incredible machine, this is one of my favorites and inspired the look of many Star trek vessels throughout the course of the films and shows!  Tony Landis, A buddy of mine who works out at Edwards AFB, got together with his friend Dennis Jenkins and wrote an incredible book called “Hypersonic, The Story of the North American X-15”  and a followup book called “The X-15 Scrapbook” filled with the extra photos that they couldn’t fit in the first book.  This is one awesome read full of facts and some incredible and rare images.  Tony is also a big Star Trek fan and has a shuttle named after him in the bay of buddies about one of the Enterprises.  Here are some pictures of the ship and some links to read more about her incredible history, also one to Amazon in regards to Tony & Dennis’s awesome book.   These two also did a book on the Valkyrie, but I am saving that intro for the XB-70 day. Enjoy.

Well I just got back from Kentucky and have had my fill of fried chicken and sweet tea!!! Really need to hit the gym now!!! Wonderfest was a great as always and the show reached record attendance, and model entries in the great modeler contest counting into the 500’s, I Got a lot  of laughs when I read the comments to my “end of the blog” prank and especially liked being cussed out in bad Chinese!! HAAAA! Sorry for the scare but couldn’t pass up a good joke!!! Went to the Air force flight museum in Dayton on the first day there, and saw so many incredible planes and rockets!! This museum was so amazing and have to go back for more next year,,,,, got lots of pics from both the museum and the convention, and  I’ll put up a few everyday this week..   Met a lot of great folks and venders that make some awesome model and figure collectibles. I’ll start posting those as well with links to the venders that had everything for those looking for that hard to find kits. Deg and his brother Greg hung out with My friend Nelson and I over the weekend and had a lot of good fun, food and laughs!!  Just to much fun.  So with that said I have to get to work but here are some treats from the show. Enjoy,  and happy Tuesday

A2-D Skyshark

This beautiful aircraft has such a beautiful shape that I used it’s profile as the design basis for most of the Nacelle shapes for the perpetual ships.. one of these babies crashed in a field by my house and I went on an aviation archeological expedition with the X- Hunters ( Two guys from Edwards AFB that have gone out and found most of the X-plane crashes in the Mojave Desert) We found this one and recovered a whole bunch of historical relics from this short lived twin propped airplane.
