klingon cloaking device

If you were ever wondering what a cloaking device looked like, well here it is… I am still at a loss why the ships of Starfleet didn’t have one of these installed and enhanced in every ship. We stole them, we hijacked enemy ships that had them on board, we knew how they worked, but no cloak for the Federation!!! funny thought!!! Oh Well… so here is the device stolen from the Klingons in DS9 episode 562, “The Emperor’s New Cloak”. You get to see the device both in the inoperative and active state. We presented these two drawings in the production meeting and it got a big laugh. We showed the cloaked version first and Ira said hey where’s the drawing??? and we said that’s what it looks like cloaked!!! HAAAA!!!! good times.

the A-4 and the jem hedar battle cruiser

It is always fun to dig thru the old aircraft images from Edwards AFB archives. This shot is Navy so it came from somewhere else but there are so man incredible aircraft that have such a strong influence on the look of many of the space craft designed for the various Star trek films and shows. For the Jem Hedar/Dominion battle cruiser, the A-4 played a major role in the overall look of the ship. This was one of the first war ships that I got to work on during the 4 years on at DS9, For DS my primary job was props and work would spill over into some fun vessel projects every once in a while. Here is the 3/4 and found some orthos that I forgot that I had drawn,  HAAA! that old man memory loss is sinking in!!!!

a few big guns from DS9 episode #516 “buisiness as usual”

this was one of those episodes that called for more than a Cardassian Suitcase, or a new dremal regenerator,, this one they needed some big new guns, for If I remeber correctly, a type of simulator firing range… What was needed for this one was a variety of major blaster designs, and a battle robot for target practice!!!!

OK then, so enjoy these pictures and everyone have great and blessed Memorial day!!!

Penumbra #567 DS9,

AHHHHH these were the bright days of working on ST DS9. 1990 to 1997 were the dark years for me,,, To sum it up quickly,,,a bad marriage,,, as is for all of us geeks, and fan boy/girls, we uber-geek out to much and don’t date enough. Naivety  was the case here, and it made for a long, blurry, dark 7 years,,, OK now that the table is set we get to DS9 and the episode called Penumbra, well lets go back a few more months to “ST Insurrection” During the end of this one I took my daughters to Sunday school at our little local leona Valley Church, and I fell madly for their Sunday School teacher,,, It took a long time to get her to go out with me but she finally said yes and we went to the screening of Insurrection for our first date. Time flew by and I learned to smile again and we were engaged shortly after. DS9 was coming to the end of it’s 7th season and the assignment came to my desk to draw a new ship for an alien race called the Breen. I started to throw some sketches together  and quickly came up with the idea that I would base this ships architecture around the letter “T”,,, “T” as  in Tara,,, HAAAA!!!!!! So the designs started coming out in various stylized fashions, first in a symmetrical layout and then into an asymmetrical style that really thru the whole more into an Alien feel. The fighter version embarked on a “Y” style design and in the drawings you’ll see that it flies in two directions,,,, Yes it was another maddening scenario with that one supervisor that always tried to make things fly the opposite direction!!! UHG!!! I was burning out with these constant directional discussions. HAAAAAA!!! Anyways the ship went thru a considerable amount of changes until it hit the final multilayered aysemetrical design that was my fav of the whole bunch,,, Usually the one chosen is the drawing you like the least but this time it was the opposite. from there the Mighty Drex took over and started to model the ship,, This was the first venture on the show that we got to work on as a team,,, It was exciting!!! Doug really made a gnarly model and loved the color he chose to put it into!!! Oh those were some awesome times. In final the ship from it’s top view is of a very stylized “T” and it was a great time to make that one for my young bride to be!!! So with that there is a lot to see so enjoy and I have to get to work!!!

Way back in the 1990’s there was a fun little show on TV called ST, DS9. It was a time when big hand built models from plastic, wood and steel were constructed to be filmed on a motion control stage,,, Wooo-WEEEE that all  seems so long ago!!! because of the huge cost factor to make and shoot a model the call for new ships on DS9 were far a few between. For the final seasons of the show there were a few calls for a handfull of new ships to be created for a few choice episodes,, who would have thought that in just a few years forward you would have single episodes with as many as 5 to six new ships filling the screen like flys on a cows butt!!! HAAA! So with that here is the super big daddy dominion battleship called for to challenge the crew of the tiny Defiant class ship “the Valiant” the ship went thru a few small changes but kept it’s overall mass and shape throughout the illustrated process!! here are the sketches that were developed plus some very nice schematic and size charts from Brad and Gilso’s web pages.  here are the links to both of their sites. and also the link to the mighty Ex-astris-Scientia page that is awfully darned cool,!! very nice site and full of very accurate scales and definitions to the various ST vehicles!!!

I had forgotten how big this drawing was,,,, I tried something bigger than the usual 11X17 (which was the max size of the copier) and tried a big 24X36 marker piece and this is what came of it!!!  A giant marker nightmare!!! Haaa! The story behind this one was this,,,  This was for the first show of season 7 and I was up at ILM on a project during the DS9 hiatus. The project went over and I got Greg Jein to fill in for me while I was away. Greg is not only the Miniature Giant but he is an outstanding artist as well. He was thrown into a concept nightmare with this Cardassian ship yard that was going thru some pretty rough approval sessions. Greg also hit a huge union snag that sadly cancelled his drawing stint in the art department. (Greg’s art from this episode is coming soon) My show got cancelled early and I got back at the same time they were kicking Greg out!!!! It was a bad time to say the least!!!! Greg’s pieces were brilliant with sweeping platforms and      docks full of ships under construction. all were getting the boot but in the long run a kluge of his work came to be the final design. To go in a totally new direction is what is shown here. It is a spin off from DS9 architecture stylized to be a huge shipyard. This too was quickly rejected but made for a fun marker sketch. here are some close ups to go with the big view. Also this is going to be a hugely busy week. Deg and I have to get the Shatner project going in full force and Wonderfest is next week and I am not ready,,,so with that the blog will most likely go slim for a day or so but if time allows I’ll keep putting things up even if I can’t get on to chat and comment back. Ok then and thanks to everyone again for a great week last week and for all the entries and links to your awesome modeling and Animations. Thanks mostly for the prayers for my daughter and for everything else. OK have a great Monday.
