Episode 003 was a big first episode after the pilot and it set the pace for multiple ship shows. It has been so long since I saw this stuff that I don’t recall the names of the races or the names of their ships,,, Damn it Jim I’m an artist not a librarian!!! Anyways I am sure that those that no of these facts will put them up for us!!! Thanks in advance to the all knowledagble ones!!! What was called for in this one was a cargo ship in distress, a bad guy ship who drills into smaller  vessels and cocoons their crews,. a rescue ship, and the drilling mechanism. all of this was great fun to work on Jim Martin was on the show and provided the designs for all the disgusting alien devices that the bad guys tortured the crew with,,, Jim really came up with some evil drawings of bodily fluid extraction pumps and hosed ship interiors!!! Some way wicked work by the master!!! the ships were just fee hand designs, no real reference for the designs except for the drill mechanism,,, I had just recently saw Caddyshack again,,,,probably for the 147th time and Rodney Dangerfields golf bag came to mind as to be the basis for the drill bit housing. Borrowing from the Vulcan Lander’s landing pads from First Contact, a retro design came forth as the magnetic docking clamps. lots of fun things to work on and notice the engine exhaust on the drawing of the bad guys ship top view,,,,, Yes again direction was an issue with ONE of the men in charge!!!! HAAAAA!

the simpler version,,,,No more off roading for you little fella!

These are the little inspection pods from the pilot episode of Enterprise. To recapture the big VFX magic that we saw in STTMP The art department was asked to recreate the service pods to fly above the Enterprise NX-01 to not only give her some scale but to show her off to the audience. The first pass of the pod was a little boxy unit that had about 10 minutes worth of time put into it. Herman Z walked by and said that we were going to reuse the Phoenix Capsule from STFC so we can start redesigning around that nose cone shape. the next version is the heaviest of designs with a lot of 4X4 accessories to give it a more rugged, industrial look. Mike Okuda was busy working on a very nice docking and hatch sequence which took the best from NASA and mixed with his own imagination came up with the following designs and details of how the coupling system works. The next sketch shows how Mikes designs were incorporated with a small pull back on the heavy detail.  The producers felt that the big off road lights were a bit much so we pulled them back to a bare minimum as well as the exterior detail. This was modeled over at Eden by the CG wizards and I’ll need to double check but I think this one was done by Lee. below are some grabs by the brilliant Jorg!!! Thank You Mr. internet Wizard

Carbon Creek #27 was a great episode and the script called for a new Vulcan rescue vessel. Doug Drexler started the new Vulcan design aesthetics of the open ringed starships with his beautiful design of the Surak. Following his lead the sketches for the D’vahl started to be put down on paper. This piggyback idea of two ships traveling interlocked came from The US Navy. Pictured at the top and the bottom of Today’s post are pictures of both vessels, The USS Dallas, and the DSRV (Deep Sea Rescue Vehicle) docked together for a rescue mission. For the Vulcan ships the same theory applied. with the addition of a moveable warp ring. For the Vulcan rescue ship We could still use the Definition of DSRV by just changing “Sea” to “Space” the approval for this one was a fairly easy one but at one point the same guy who flopped directions of Ruoffo’s ship in ST Insurrection, was flipping this one around with a puzzled look on his face so I raced back to the office and drew a big forward arrow on it!!!!! HAAAAA that was a close one!! This was a fun ship on a bunch of levels, and that being it was going to have some animated pieces and the little rescue ship. Mathematically you could get a good range of motion with one hinge point. The modeling of this ship was awesome and My old man brain won’t let me remember Which modeling Deity from Eden brought this one to life. I am sure by the end of the day the real genus will be named!!!! HAAAA!  the rejected idea came from a football shape cut open like a sandal, Ahhhh, not only can you fly around the galaxy in it but you can throw a touchdown for the winning point, and wear it to the beach after. Have a great Thursday and enjoy the movie to everyone going today!!!

one of the rigs in the distance

this was just about the end of the series!!! So close to #100 but just didn’t make it. Thedrawing projects were big up to the end and #97 called for a fun mobile mining rig and nifty little moon base. The base was almost a direct reuse of a mars scape done For John carpenter’s Ghost of Mars. The illustration was to grand for john’s film and it was great to be able to pass the lines on to this episode,  this ship was one of the heavily credited to Ron Cobb pieces and it was a very intense drawing that I really got my pen work into.  I don’t remember who modeled this one so Hopefully I can find out and get some grabs to go along with this one.

This was a fun little episode and the scheduling was a quiet so these versions got to have a little more time to be rendered out nicely. The sideways flying pick was milled over for a while but in the end the Catamaran made the finals and it was a beauty when Pierre finished his fab modeling!!! I missed this episode so I don’t recall if it had much screen time. OK off to the drawing table so have a great Tuesday fellow bloggers!

This little chuck wagon in space comes from one of the early Enterprise episodes called Terra Nova. The premise of the show was that this ship crash-lands and the survivors make homesteads from the wreckage. here are the sketches that were worked to best utilize usable shapes for dwellings constructed from panels and debris

the pirate ships of Anomaly #54

here are the 1st three versions that were considered to aggressive and not piraty enough. the upper left ship had to be rendered in a more buoyant fashion and that is where the grouper fish idea came from,,,boy I was glad that it was a catch and release on that idea!!!

Anomaly #54 was the first outing that took the Enterprise deep into space to fight the Xindi  threat against earth. The following are sketches of a pirate vessel that has inhabited (illegally) one of the space anomaly creating spheres. This was to be a one time alien encounter so there were no guidelines to follow on what their ships would look like. Pirate to me is sharp, dark, wicked, fast, mean ,and crude, so I tried that mindset with these outings,,, In final though it looks like the shovel version made the grade, and as we have learned about Star Trek bad guys yard tools make the best reference….. remember Insurrection!!! HAAAA! have a great weekend every one and thanks for all the fun and awesome entries sent in for the Shatner project.   Next week, the Cardassian ship yards. my review of the new Star trek film and by popular request, the SS Conestoga, the Sarajevo and more from Insurrection with the shuttle, the Cousteau, and Data’s scout ship.  Coming  soon the ships of nemesis and the variations of the Enterprise E

Based on Nasa’s X-38 the shuttlecraft for Enterprise was to be a quick, small, and very cramped little ship. This one didn’t go for much more than the above sketches.  What was nice is that it eased thru the approval stage quickly because the main torture was being given to Doug’s Enterprise and the Sulibon Helix ship,,, OOOOHHHHHH those thoughts bring back much pain!!!! The craft was a lot of fun to throw down on paper and it is one i wished there would have been more time to work on. It went thru a variety of different wing configurations and body thicknesses. after the roughs were approved they Went to Mighty Fritz who started everyday with a comment about Mazzithera Cheeeeeeeeezeee. Fritz had the tough job of designing the plans and overseeing the construction. Two shuttles were made for the show and side by side in the bay they were nick named the flying clogs. Oh Yah dot iz goot.

Found this lurking in the dark corners of my computer so here is an add on for the shuttle pictures.
