It’s amazing how far Vulcan has come since the tiny budget-minded set in TOS. TMP was kinda off, even compared to the tiny bit we saw in TOS, until the DVD came out with a new-and-improved Vulcan. However, Star Trek III really gave Vulcan a push in its final direction and then you guys did amazing work with it on Enterprise. It’s a really cool planet (event though it’s hot. ;))
What planet, it got sucked into a blackhole!! (well it did if you thiink the new movie was good. 😉 )

Another beautiful picture John – this one has kind of a Chesley Bonestell feel to it. You did a great job with all the Vulcan designs on Enterprise, it really helped change it from a name to a place.

I’ve liked all of your Vulcan stuff, but this one really makes it feel like an ancient race that has a rich history. I think that they had to learn to control their emotions because otherwise they’d go crazy living there. 🙂
I think the glowing lava(?) spewing at the bottom right and the way the sunlight filters through the statues and across the forground are a great touch…the way you make it actually glow. Plus the detail on the robes of the statues; you are the king, my friend!! This would indeed make a fantastic poster!
BTW, it is now linked with the bigger version for those who posted earlier.
Of all the ‘places’ in Star Trek, Vulcan is my favorite – the most interesting and the most real in my imagination – and the ancient culture and the planet’s history always had a lot to do with that. I would absolutely spend a week’s vacation on Vulcan.
Do you think Vulcans ever had debates and conspiracie theories about who built all these massive statues? I’m pretty sure little green men came down from outspace and helped to build them! 🙂
(Can I just say from an illustration point of view – I love that you brightened the border level with the sun’s position. Most of us wouldn’t have thought of that!)

I agree that that does not inspire the oppression of emotions. I’d be scared to death there. “HOLY CRAP, there are HUGE pools of lava on either side of the path… I don’t think I NEED to be over there. Can I go home?”
This pictures are another proof, what a great mistake the destruction of Vulcan in the new JJ-verse was. Thank God, we have now TWO Star Trek universes. I prefer the one with the intact Vulcan.

You know, it occurred to me, the irony of Vulcan and Andoria. Vulcan’s have cold logic and live on a desert world, Andorian’s have hot tempers and live on an ice world. But humans are just right. 😛
I remember reading in one of the Star Trek novels that Vulcan was a desert world due to massive nuclear wars just before the time of Surak, and that is one of the things that led to the Vulcan suppression of emotion. Just one question, was this ever a thought when you were designing the planet, or did you have other reasons why it was so hot?
