this was just about the end of the series!!! So close to #100 but just didn’t make it. Thedrawing projects were big up to the end and #97 called for a fun mobile mining rig and nifty little moon base. The base was almost a direct reuse of a mars scape done For John carpenter’s Ghost of Mars. The illustration was to grand for john’s film and it was great to be able to pass the lines on to this episode, this ship was one of the heavily credited to Ron Cobb pieces and it was a very intense drawing that I really got my pen work into. I don’t remember who modeled this one so Hopefully I can find out and get some grabs to go along with this one.
Cool, thanks for the sketches, I loved this ep!
That was one of my favourite episodes from Enterprise … The mining rig looks very primitive but fits the style of old man-made objects very much. It always reminded me of the ECS ships from Enterprise. While we’re at the episode, did you design that defense cannon ? (the one that guy wanted to use to destroy starfeet HQ) I liked that one very much too … just like everything you designed…
Did Alain Rivard model this one? For some reason that’s sticking in my head…
that’s who did it!! thanks
Yeah, Alain did a lot of modelling for this episode, and the mining ship was one of those that he did.
I´ve always had a soft spot for this one because it´s such a departure from the usual Terran elements.
And IIRC it was Alain Rivard who built the model (also built the Mirror Tholian character). His portfolio website seems to be undergoing maintenance but he´s a regular over at SciFi-Meshes.
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for this one because Robocop was in it. 😀
Great stuff, thanks again for sharing some wonderful concept art. I remember when I saw that thing lift off the first time, I was thinking that someone was a friggin’ genius for designing a cool base that made for a believable starship. I should’ve known it was you. 😉
Hey John..yep..we worked on those models togheter via Eden at the time
Beautiful details! I’m a fan of rather elegant designs, so it’s quite diffcult for a mining rig in general to touch my soul 😉 But John, your pictures prove that there can be a sort of beauty in any kind of project.
Considering the quality of the technical parts of the pictures, one could possible think, that the sourround may not be such important. But nothing compares to the look at the (rising?) Earth!!!
In my mind, this two-parter marked the true end of “Enterprise” before that travesty holodeck episode.
The design was great, the characters well-realized and the story began the true path to the Federation that the show should have been since the beginning.
These were some pretty cool episodes! Love the drawing of that mining rig! With the level of detail in there, how long did it take you to finish?
Wow, very good drawings.
I always wanted to know how the coloring is made. It’s great.
Thanks
First time I ever saw this drawing, I thought of a jelly fish (not related to new movie…way before that! 🙂 ). Seeing it as the station the drawing kinda makes me think of Farpoint Station, which oddly does look a lot like a jelly fish, after it’s freed.
I really like the practical, unusual, industrial look to it. I don’t recall exactly how it looked during the episode, but the only screencap I can find looks so disappointing after these great drawings!!! Kinda like baby poop, even…no, I’m not calling this beeuteeful creation names! Take a look.
If it’s in another episode maybe I could find a better one, but this one was it, I think.
Just noticed a couple of screencaps of her in the air and a couple of cool cu looks, if anyone cares or can’t find ’em…I’m sure I have less skills at these things than most of you here!
I love this mining ship, for some reason it always reminds me of Space 1999.
