I have been waiting for both of these complete scores for over 25 years and they are finally out and already almost sold out,,, Just got the CD’s in the mail yesterday and all those tracks I loved from the films have been brilliantly remastered and presented here for the first time!!! Thanks to Robert Townson and all the folks over at Varese Sarabande for putting out this beautiful score for the “Right Stuff”, and Lukas Kendall and the gang over at SAE for the brilliant work on the complete Kahn CD!!!

Eavesdropping with Johnny 
Apparently, Paramount has a new music exec who’s a bit more enthusiastic when it comes to licensing soundtrack rights to specialty companies like Film Score Monthly, Intrada, etc.
LaLa Land Records was the first out of the gate with the complete score to Airplane! by Elmer Bernstein which was released a couple months ago (and is now out of print – only 3000 copies were available for legal reasons).

Now FSM has given us the complete and remastered Star Trek II for our listening pleasure. I got my copy two days ago and I’ve been listening to it non-stop. It’s weird hearing Enterprise Attacks Reliant and Kirk Takes Command without sound effects! Hopefully FSM will get to release the complete Trek III. (The LP rights are owned by a different company so it would be like starting from scratch.)

Yeah, good stuff to have, eh. Just got and been watching the HBO mini-series From Earth To The Moon, and while watching the fifth eps. last night, I was like, I wonder if they put out the soundtrack to this show, and sure enough they did. Got it for like $5 off Amazon. Sweet. Great score, eh.
I ordered the The Right Stuff collector’s edition DVD when I got FETTM, and after I watch that again, I’m sure I’ll want the soundtrack to that one as well.

deg, I agree that FTETTM has great music, including the opening to each individual episode with some appropriate music of the time. I’d like to have all of it!
They even used the Fireball XL-5 theme song for eps. 5, Spider. How fun is that?!
I wonder if it will be one the soundtrack? I already have it either way, though. 🙂

I love the theme song for FTETTM which was written by the late Michael Kamen. Michael also did the complete score for Band of Brothers which is a fantastic soundtrack as well! 🙂
Band of Brothers – fantastic, indeed! So much good stuff, so little money!! I’m working on it, so one day I will have a decent collection of the movie music I love! 🙂
AH forget, I just went and ordered The Right Stuff as these tend to go fast. Took me forever and a day to finally track down a primo copy of Predator (after getting one crappy bootleg version), so best to get these LE issues up while they’re available as you never know when you’ll find ’em again, at a decent price anywho.

I’ve always wanted to hear the rejected RIGHT STUFF score by John Barry. Supposedly Conti did his score for Kaufman in record (i.e., Horner) time. You can kind of guess how the Barry sounded based on other stuff he has done, but he can occasionally make a bad call (BLACK HOLE cough cough.)
Kinda makes me wonder about who sKaufman would have had score his unmade TREK pic. He had Ken Adam for production design, Derek Meddings for miniatures, Jordan Belson for opticals … and yet I don’t think Goldsmith ever did a Kaufmann picture.

I’ve read Conti based a lot of his quickie TRS score and themes offa Gustav Holst’s The Planets. I have to give it the hairy ear listen when it gets here and decide for myself, eh. Either way, not a bod base to spring from, IMO.

Arguably two of the best movie soundtracks ever.
I think my all-time favorite Trek theme/piece (and there are many), but if I had to choose one, it would be Returning To Vulcan from ST III. I believe (please, anyone, correct me if I’m wrong) they used it in the awesome Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country teaser trailer with the scenes projected onto Refit-E, with I believe Christopher Plummer doing the voice-over, with the lines; They have been our guides, our protectors, and our friends… I love that promo the most.

Didn’t Horner try incorporating Goldsmith’s Blaster Beam from ST:TMP or at least try to emulate its sound? That’s one of things I liked about the TWOK soundtrack. Besides the sweeping nautical theme, it also sounded like he was trying to subtly carry over a few of the first films cues.
Yep, I think the blaster beam can be heard in the final battle, and in Star Trek 3, when Kirk steals the Enterprise.
As soon as I read “almost sold out” I immediately grabbed my wallet and bought my copy of STII, TWOK!!!!!

Horner’s work in TWOK is classic. I love the music from that movie! There’s just something about it that touches my soul!
I’ve never seen “Right Stuff”. That’s another one I need to add to the ol’ list of things to watch!
I recorded “Right Stuff” on my DVR last week, along with the movie “From the Earth to the Moon” from 1958 (Jules Verne) and “For All Mankind”, the documentary that uses nothing but NASA footage and the voices of Apollo astronauts (mission and interview footage) and mission control for a short two hour movie from the astronauts’ point of view. I think that it covers a lot of familiar footage, but in the human point of view of the astronauts experiencing everything for the first time “for all mankind”.
I’m planning to watch “Right Stuff” and hopefully FAM today (after my homework, of course), since it’s my day off and I will be increasingly busy next week. I’ll be paying close attention to the soundtrack! 🙂
I just checked out the beginning of RS, just to see if Robert Osborn (TCM) had a special guest to introduce it. It turns out that Buzz Aldrin has been talking with him about all of the space programming the whole day! He has some cool insights to the movie and his detailed thoughts of the accuracy are coming after the film (he said the book is very accurate, but the movie is a bit dramatized). I didn’t even know about Buzz or I would have recorded the whole day!
Oh man, I missed that, darn!

Well, I gotta say, I’m a little underwhelmed by this soundtrack. OVerall, I give it 3 outta 5 stars. The main theme, Breaking The Sound Barrier, is rousing and well in the spirit of the film (five stars there). Very nice arrangement of strings and horns. And there are a coupla other passages that are pretty good, but overall, at lot of it sounds very “canned” and/or retreaded, and 80s sounding in some places, particularly the synth-ed out Mach I.
I guess Conti was cranking this one out due to time, and quite franking, it shows. You can tell, he put the best of himself into the opening Breaking The Sound Barrier 4;47 min. theme, and if he could have put the same amount of time and effort into the rest of the score, it would have been grand overall. Still, worth having for the Breaking The Sound Barrier and some of the other bits as well.
Maybe the other parts will grow on me in time.
I did also just pick up Ennio Morricone’s Red Sonja, as well as Basil Poledouris’ Conan The Destroyer. Both excellent, IMO. You can really hear Morricone’s signature The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly sound on Red Sonja, and Poledouris’ Conan The Destroyer is a much better follow-up to Conan The Barbarian in soundtrack, than the film was itself.
I still liked the film, it was just more in tone with the latter-day writing and feel of the regular Conan The Barbarian comic-book, whereas the first film was more in tone with the b/w mag, The Savage Sword of Conan. All good in the end, just different feels to each. Always loved the scores to both films, and I’m surprised it took me this long to finally pick up Conan The Destoyer.
Also picked up Michael Giacchino’s recent Star Trek soundtrack. I gotta say, that’s an awesome soundtrack. Very moving, esp. Labor of Love, the scene when James T. is being born and George is saving lil’ baby Kirk and Mrs. Kirk. What a beautiful and moving piece of music!
Also picked up Jerry’s Insurrection and Nemesis score. Can’t ever go wrong with Jerry, eh.

Oh, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is an awesome score too, BTW. IMO. Great throw-back 40’s classic sounding adventure themes.
